Cleaner Client Data Starts with Better Capture
The quality of an accounting firm’s data is heavily influenced by what happens before information reaches the bookkeeping system. Dext argues that firms should give as much thought to the client facing “capture layer” as they do to internal practice management, tax and accounting software.
The key principle is simple: make submitting information as easy as possible for clients. Rather than expecting clients to regularly log into unfamiliar portals, practices can meet them through tools and habits they already use, such as smartphones and messaging apps.
Mobile first capture can include taking photos of receipts and invoices, while WhatsApp integration can remove the need for clients to learn a separate system. Automated bank feeds and tools such as Fetch can go a step further by collecting information that clients might otherwise forget to submit.
This matters because better capture is about more than convenience. If information is missing or incomplete at intake, the practice may spend additional time chasing documents or correcting data later. Reducing friction at the start can therefore create a more reliable foundation for bookkeeping, reporting and advisory work.
