Missed a Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax deadline? Here's what happens next.
FreeAgent breaks down the consequences depending on which deadline you've missed:
Missed the MTD sign-up deadline? You should register as soon as possible. HMRC has confirmed there are no penalty points or fines for missing the initial sign-up deadline, but delaying further could make future compliance more difficult.
Missed your first quarterly update? During the first year of MTD, HMRC won't issue a penalty point. You can still complete your bookkeeping, submit the update late and get back on track.
Missed several quarterly updates? You'll need to submit each update in order, starting with the first quarter. The good news is that HMRC isn't issuing penalty points for missed quarterly updates in year one, giving businesses time to catch up.
Missed your final Self Assessment return? This is different. Late filing penalties still apply, with an immediate £100 penalty if you miss the deadline for your 2025/26 Self Assessment return.
If you're transitioning to MTD for Income Tax or helping clients navigate the new requirements this practical guide explains what to do next and how to avoid future issues.
